Linear Access Control Installation: The Rockwall Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible access control components across Rockwall, and most replacement jobs land between $350 and $900 installed, depending on the specific part and how much wiring or programming is involved. Typical turnaround on a failed Linear keypad, receiver, or control board is same-day or next-day once we confirm which model you have. Most Rockwall homeowners discover the problem the hard way: the gate worked fine for years, then one afternoon the keypad stopped responding, or the remote that opened it yesterday suddenly does nothing, and the gate just sits there while you wait on the shoulder of your own driveway.

That moment is where we come in. Victor Salinas has been working on Linear gate systems across Rockwall County for the better part of three decades, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every customer: if the gate doesn’t work right, nothing else about it matters.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear produces a wide range of access control hardware, and not every part fits every model. The most common units we service in Rockwall are the Linear MegaCode series receivers and transmitters, the AK-11 and AK-21 digital keypads, the AM3Plus and APeX series operators, and the AE-1000 and AE-2000 telephone entry systems. The key to getting the right part is identifying the exact model number. On keypads, the label is usually inside the front cover or on the back of the circuit board. On receivers, look for a sticker on the housing with a part number that typically starts with “MGT” or “ACT.”

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: older Linear units, especially receivers and keypads manufactured before roughly 2005, used a different radio frequency and block-coded format than the newer MegaCode systems. A keypad from 1999 will not talk to a receiver built in 2015, no matter how carefully you wire it. We check the manufacture date and frequency before we order a single part. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, our honest take is that OEM Linear boards and keypads are worth the extra cost for the control board and radio receiver, since those are the components that fail from heat exposure and low-quality aftermarket boards tend to die young in a Texas summer. For simple items like wire, enclosures, and mounting hardware, quality aftermarket parts are perfectly fine and can save you real money.

Ironworks Gate Co. is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Linear, but we work on their equipment every week, and we stock the common parts on the truck so we’re not making you wait on a distributor.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. The keypad is sending a signal, but the receiver or control board is not acting on it. Usually this is a dead relay on the receiver board or a broken wire between the receiver and the operator. The keypad itself may be fine.
  • Remote works when you’re close but not from the street. Linear receivers lose range as the antenna wire corrodes or the receiver board starts to weaken. In Rockwall’s clay-heavy soil and summer heat, we see antenna connectors corrode faster than folks expect.
  • The gate opens on its own or keeps cycling. A failing Linear control board can send phantom open commands, especially after a storm when moisture has gotten into the enclosure. This is a safety issue, not just an annoyance, and it should be addressed quickly.
  • You have to punch the code in twice, or the keypad freezes. The membrane or the buttons on older Linear keypads wear out after years of sun exposure. The circuit board underneath usually still works, which is why replacing the keypad face can sometimes buy you more time, but most homeowners just replace the whole unit once it starts acting up.
  • The telephone entry system rings but you can’t hear the caller, or the call won’t connect at all. Linear AE-series telephone entry units rely on a phone line or cellular module. When the module fails, you lose the ability to buzz guests in remotely. We see this most often after Rockwall’s spring storms knock out phone service.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what you can expect for installed Linear access control work in Rockwall. These are the prices we quote, and the price we quote is the price you pay. Nothing gets installed until you’ve approved the number in writing.

  • Digital keypad (AK-11, AK-21, or equivalent): $350 to $550 installed.
  • Receiver board or radio receiver swap (MegaCode series): $400 to $650 installed, including reprogramming your existing remotes.
  • Control board replacement (APeX, AM3Plus): $500 to $900 installed, including testing all safety inputs and limit settings.
  • Telephone entry system (AE-1000, AE-2000): $700 to $1,100 installed, including phone line or cellular module setup and programming.

What drives the range is the age of the system, how much of the existing wiring we can reuse, and whether we need to run new low-voltage wire from the operator to the keypad or reader. Every quote includes the part, the labor, the programming, and a full test of the gate’s safety features. The work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things a Rockwall homeowner can safely check before calling us. Make sure the keypad has power: check the breaker, and if it’s a battery-powered unit, swap the battery. Look for obvious damage, like a cracked keypad housing or a wire that’s pulled loose from the terminal block. Clean the keypad face gently with a dry cloth. Those are reasonable homeowner steps.

What we don’t recommend is opening the operator cabinet and poking around the control board yourself. The capacitor on a Linear operator holds a charge even after the power is off, and the board itself works on low voltage but sits right next to line-voltage wiring. A wrong move with a screwdriver can turn a $400 repair into a $1,200 replacement. If the problem is not a dead battery or a popped breaker, call us at (936) 715-3043. We’ll walk you through a few checks over the phone and set up a visit if it needs one.
